Understanding Hydration Needs At Different Ages
As our lives evolve and we journey through different stages, our hydration needs adapt to support our changing bodies. But keeping up with hydration can be a challenge—whether it's for ourselves or those we care for. In this blog, we'll explore the unique hydration needs of different ages.
Hydration for Kids
Children may not have a packed schedule like adults, but don't be fooled—they're bursting with energy. All that running around causes them to lose water rapidly. Kids also have a higher proportion of body water than any other age group, making replenishment crucial. So, how much water do they need? On average, children under eight should drink five glasses of water each day. But these are just guidelines. When the temperature soars, their hydration intake must rise too.
Hydration for Teens and Young Adults
Did you know dehydration during the teenage years can affect brain structure and function? As students face important exams that shape their future, staying hydrated becomes key to maintaining focus and improving grades. In fact, bringing water bottles to exams boosts performance by an average of 5%. For teens aged 14 to 18, boys should aim for around eleven glasses of water daily, while girls should drink around eight.
Hydration for Adults
As adults, we juggle multiple responsibilities and face the pressures of work. Between office air conditioning, hectic schedules, and the lure of caffeine in the morning, it's easy to forget about proper hydration. Not to mention, young adults tend to indulge in alcoholic beverages more than other age groups. To combat this, adult men should aim for about 3.7 litres of fluid per day, while women should strive for around 2.7 litres.
Remember, over 80% of fluids should come from hydrational beverages (and not sugary drinks). Check out this blog to learn more about maintaining healthy hydration habits.
Hydration for the Elderly
As we age, hydration becomes increasingly vital. Older adults often have reduced thirst signals and are more susceptible to acute or chronic illnesses. Hydration plays a crucial role in the healing process, making it essential for elderly adults to drink eight glasses of water daily. But there are significant barriers they face. In a recent Dehydration Recognition In our Elders (DRIE) study, researchers discovered among long-term care home residents aged over 65 years, a staggering 20% were found to be dehydrated, while an additional 28% were at risk of dehydration.
