Reasons to Pack Hydration When Travelling This Summer
Travel-induced dehydration is the last thing we want to endure on our holidays. Aeroplanes, trains, coaches, and cruise ships – they’re all notorious environments for draining our body’s moisture. An aircraft cabin is known to be drier than the Sahara Desert with humidity levels between 10 and 20 per cent. Trains and coaches are kept cool with fully-powered air conditioning, effectively drawing out all the humidity in the air. As we all begin to start travelling again more this summer, whether it’ll be by air or on the ground, we’ve explored why it’s important to stay hydrated in this article.
Dehydration Exaggerates Travel Fatigue
Travel fatigue, also known as jet lag, is a frustrating phenomenon that occurs when our body is misaligned with our local time zone. Travel fatigue typically develops after a long flight or train journey, involving either excessive daytime sleepiness or an inability to sleep which can be exacerbated by dehydration. This is because it affects the sleep hormone called melatonin. Dehydration reduces the levels of essential amino acids in our body which are needed to produce melatonin, throwing off our sleep cycle as a result.
Dehydration Can Affect Mood
Travelling is an important part of looking after our mental wellbeing. In fact, one study found that three days after taking a holiday, travellers felt less anxious, more rested and in a better mood. Unfortunately, dehydration can put a dampener on that. A dehydrated state throws off the delicate dopamine and serotonin balance in our brain which can cause feelings of anxiety, low motivation, and fatigue. As you drink more hydrating fluids, it will stimulate the flow of nutrients and hormones that generate those feel-good endorphins.
Add Electrolytes for Fluid Retention
We recommend taking an isotonic drink with you rather than plain water as the added electrolytes will help your body absorb and retain the fluids you’re consuming during the journey. Electrolytes play a massive role in hydration by directing water to the areas in your body that need it the most. Limiting diuretic drinks such as coffee and alcohol is also known to decrease the severity of travel fatigue. Both drinks can cause fluids to pass through the body quicker, leading to dehydration when not balanced with enough hydrating fluids.
